It seems that no matter where we go, the most outrageously gorgeous buildings are churches, and Copenhagen was certainly no exception! The skyline is littered with beautiful buildings, and 90% of them are churches. Here are some of my favorites.

Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke in Danish)

Church of Our Saviour

This is a Dutch baroque-style church that is easily recognized by it’s golden external corkscrew spire/staircase at the top. The church was finished in 1695, but the golden spire wasn’t completed until 1752.

You can see it from everywhere in Copenhagen, and before we even found out what it was, Brian and I knew we had to go see it. We’re easily suckered in by shiny objects, apparently. But on a similar note, we generally like to find the tallest places in any given area and go to the top (which makes absolutely no sense given my fear of heights…)

We climbed to the top, held on for dear life, and got some absolutely breathtaking views of Copenhagen from here!

St. Alban’s English Church

St. Alban’s English Church

This is an Anglican church built in the 1880s to accommodate the growing English congregation in Copenhagen. It is designed in a gothic revival style, and I’ve never seen anything like it! The entire church is made of flint and limestone, and it’s so cool to the touch.

St. Alban’s is also really close to where The Little Mermaid sits. I would highly recommend visiting this gorgeous place, and then, since you’re just so close, you might as well go see TLM. It’s true what they say about it being an underwhelming monument, but when you go in with extremely low expectations, it’s much less disappointing.

Frederik’s Church aka The Marble Church (Frederiks Kirke aka Marmorkirken in Danish)

The Marble Church

This is an Evangelical Lutheran church designed in 1740. It’s the largest church dome in Scandinavia, and the probable inspiration for it is St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It’s really amazing to see from a distance, and is one of the most recognizable churches from the many high vantage points in the city.

Chuch of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke in Danish)

This is the National Cathedral of Denmark, right in the middle of downtown Copenhagen. The thing I like most about it isn’t necessarily how pretty it is, but just the fact that it sits smack in the middle of a bustling city center, right next to the university and hundreds of shops in the shopping district!
